Most machines will come with preset steps configured, based off of the stepper motor and belt configuration.
The steps per millimeter (steps/mm) calculation is used to calibrate the x, y, z and e axis of your 3d printer.
With a little bit of time and measuring, prints can be within.05mm accuracy.
If not, you need to do some recalibration (see below).
The printer stays in sync with the software through the firmware which sets these directions.

X & y represent horizontal dimension z represents vertical dimension each coordinate represent a point in space to make up the dimension of the object in space.
If you measure 40 mm, you are done.
